Aya's an ex-cop with magic mitochondria from Squaresoft's "maybe we like horror rpgs" phase. She survived a six-day assault from the mother of all mitochondria in New York, and then joins an FBI task force dedicated to hunting down what remains of those monsters and discovers a conspiracy to advance the human race using her DNA.

Personality wise, she feels like an outsider due to her powers, but she's quick to act like she doesn't care and crack wise with the best of them. She can also literally set things and people on fire by manipulating their mitochondria with her super special ones (but she doesn't do so unless she absolutely cannot help it).

Piers Nivans is a Good Boy. Talking a bit more seriously, Piers is a former soldier and current member of the Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance (BSAA) special operations unit. Basically, he fights zombies and things that aren't actually zombies but are the result of biological weapons use. He's served under Chris Redfield, the only other surviving member of a mission gone wrong in Edonia, and the one who dragged a drunken and amnesiac Chris back into the fray. And long story short, he did a lot of fighting before he lost his arm and took a biological weapon in order to get his team mates out of danger and at the cost of his own life. However, he'll be from just before being injured or immediately after, but before he is infected.

Piers himself is a pretty tough but kind guy. He has no sympathy for Chris running from his past or his vendetta, but he clearly cares about him and his squad and is respected by other soldiers.
