I might go with pre death and then canon update him later if desired. I'm sure people could fill him in on important stuff anyway.

Canon updating's certainly an option! Yanli here's from just after Phoenix Mountain so he's alive in her timeline even if she hasn't met him yet. (I am considering eventually updating her to Nightless City but that's a long ways away.) She'd welcome him just the same though and generally be delighted to have another shy person to befriend.
