I believe they actually need us, in a sense. They said that the natives can only produce demichroma, and those of us from other worlds can produce the more potent version of it, chroma, to repair their world after their own calamity took place.

[ Which is understandable. If he could repair his own world by excessively holding hands, he'd do it. He'd do it all the time. But here... he doesn't feel as personally responsible for everything that happened.

Not that that stops him from helping. ]

I have not entirely figured out how the animal parts facilitate that, but I have a few theories.
