It's a wedding tradition in certain cultures. Essentially, it's what it sounds like-- [He moves closer to the tree as he speaks, holding the ribbon end steady so she can measure out enough. How big is this dang tree, anyway.]

The two people bind their hands together as part of the ceremony as a symbolic gesture of their vows. I've never seen it in person, but it sounds interesting.
