[Samus had very much the same idea coming across one of those comm devices. Heck, it still had power so whoever left it behind hadn't left it for long which meant she could reasonably find and ideally talk with whatever alien civilization decided to welcome her into their sweet graces without any warning this time. Well, without her sticking her nose into their trouble first, anyway. There is also genuine curiosity driving her as she picks and fiddles at it.
Only problem was that Samus has effectively one hand to work with. She's remarkably adept despite the handicap through years of practice and even has some tools in her arm canon to help out and serve as a second hand. Still, she woefully underestimates what it takes to pry the antennae out, and it breaks. Probably the only potentially useful thing in that entire sliver of hardware. Hm. Maybe she could find another one. She gently cradles the partly dismantled comm device in her hand and explores as usual, arm canon first.
Maybe, around the next twists and turns of crystal caverns, she just found some nerd holding another one. She doesn't want to startle him so she doesn't advance any further but habit means she's still pointing the arm canon at him. It's how she says hello.]
