[Hazel is the complete opposite of the kind of person that Guanshan would be instinctively diving towards - smaller than him by more than a bit, frail enough that a strong wind might snap her in half - but she's the one whose attention is being grabbed by all of the shrieking and threats of falling (jumping?) overboard. there's a part of her that's really, really tempted to just let one of the sea lions snap him up, but in the end she just can't do it. it'd probably just make the stupid things more aggressive anyway.

cutting in front of the near-hysterical boy as best one can when they're so tiny, she displays a stunning lack of self-preservation by leaning forward rather than away from the hungry beast. without so much as a blink she's shoving her arm straight into the animal's throat, reaching back until its gnashing teeth as up to her shoulder. these ones may have gills, but it's almost certain that they would still have an uvula. if she could just...reach -
