I might need to learn how to fight, or at least not die, if the Big Guy keeps refusing to get involved.

[Bruce is saying that with great skepticism. Fighting simply isn't in his own nature. Not to mention he's a middle-aged man of average build and he can't see himself ending up on a treadmill or something. Still, the reality is if he knew how to fight better, he might have been more useful at Wakanda. He did win a fight, all on his own, but he can't keep counting on blind luck in this case. He isn't really ready to go that way, despite his words.

That is a footnote for the time being, that the Hulk still is in a temper tantrum deep inside him. It may be why on the whole Bruce has been slightly more relaxed in public and around others; he is less concerned about an instant Hulk disaster. But that could change easily.

His eyebrows furrow and he shakes his head.]
No, you were right. I was backsliding. [His guilt over the Hulk being set off and destroying a city mixed with his own failure by creating Ultron just sent Bruce too far past his threshold. His instinct was to run, to get out of the way. But that was pre-Avengers Bruce thinking.]

I had to help clean up my own mess. [Did it hurt, when she kissed him and then forced the turn into the Hulk? Yeah, it stung. But it made sense. It would have taken too long to convince him otherwise.] But it gave Ross a foothold. [Bruce knows about Ross. That is something he is not even close to coming to terms with or accepting. Seeing him again when Rhodey was hiding him, before Thanos got there, was like nothing had changed at all over the years. He still felt furious, attacked, pained. The man is his nemesis, his tormenter.]

One of the things that used to keep me up at night was thinking when he'd come for me. And how he'd hurt all of you to do it.
