QUESTIONS MEME

THE QUESTIONS MEME

A first big 'n successful round of apps has concluded and the game is getting off to a roll - since there are always brains to be picked and new pals and acquaintances to be made, how's about we all play a little getting-to-know-you game?

HOW TO PLAY:
• Leave a comment below with your name and the characters who you play.
• Respond to others' comments with questions - they can be about their characters, their current in-game plans or things they'd like to play, their CR, RP in general, their canons and fandoms, or most anything else.
• Answer questions you've received! Keep it short or TL;DR to your heart's content, depending on how much you have or are in the mood to say!
• After each answer you give, ask a question back to the person who answered you. Keep the thread of questioning up for as long as both parties are game!
• Go for it - make friends, make new plans, make anything you like!

There's a ton of lore but most of it is skeletal. The contents that fills out backstories etc is largely fan created. There are some unspoken universal things that the fans agree on and sort of follow for the most part but the rest is pretty fluid. It's why you have such a high degree of variance between character and tone interpretations but the canon stuff is what keeps those interpretations within a given and recognizable range (parodies and memes excluded). It's why fans tend to have the saying "Everyone has a Gensokyo they hold in their heart" acknowledging that everyone's varied interpretation is as valid as anyone else's.

Incidentally, this is also why the wiki can be fairly useless for RP purposes since each individual player will have a slightly different interpretation.

As for the games... Side-games excluded. they're fairly self contained. Each one follows the resolution of an "incident" and characters from previous games will occasionally show up to help solve the incident or act as repeat antagonists. The games may reference things that happened in previous games but not always. Usually references happen in places like the official manga or other printworks.

I've watched persona games being played but never really played them myself. What is your favorite aspect about the gameplay in the various games and what are some of your favorite strategies for difficult encounters?

Are Touhou characters hard to app in DWRP because of the nature of their canon?

Oh my goodness YES but it also largely depends on which character is being apped. Characters that are popular or are a part of popular cliques like in the SDM can be some of the hardest since everyone has their own idea of how these characters work etc. It gets to the point where you don't actually know if you want someone on the mod staff familiar with the canon or not. It's so stressful lol.

Other difficult characters are ones whose personality are very heavily dependent on their powers like Koishi here. Especially since a lot of places want to straight up remove powers and abilities that they deem "OP" and, admittedly, they kind of are. But removing them also kind of means you're removing some personality trait by extension. In my experience I've found placing stamina limits (Sakuya) or recoil penalties (Koishi) on the powers and then going out of your way that "these limits don't exist in canon and I'm doing this to nerf them" will usually let you keep them mostly in tact.

Characters that are also very... let's just say dynamic in how they're played are hard to app just because of the subtle range that's required to play them well. Characters like Byakuren, Yukari, and the Toyohime come to mind.

What made you pick Temple? What do you like about him?

I can definitely understand that.

Because Temple doesn’t have much canon (he’s the main villain of s15 and only appears in that particular season), there is quite a bit of wiggle room in his characterization, and so I do worry that, even though my interpretation of Temple makes sense to me, someone on the mod staff of a game who is familiar with him might have a different interpretation of him and reject him because I don’t play the kind of Temple they’d like to see.

What made me pick Temple and what do I like about him?

Well, a lot of things, tbh. As a RPer, I tend to be very faithful to one or two characters, who tend also to be my absolute faves for everything else, fandom-wise. And Temple’s my absolute fave character at the moment.

(And I get the feeling that my style of character playing is not typical for DWRPers.)

So, to me, it feels entirely natural that I chose to play Temple.

But, as to why, well... I basically found that I adored him as soon as he was introduced on the show. At first, it was because Church was dead and not coming back and he was the closest thing to Church around but as I got to know him, I found that I started to appreciate him for himself.

Because Temple is basically exactly the kind of character I love.

He’s a villain with a tragic backstory, one who was used by other people to serve their own ends and struck back against those people.

He’s loyal to the people he cares about, and clingy/codependent as well towards the ones he cares the most about. And very passionate about the things he cares about.

He’s someone who was told he couldn’t measure up to other people’s standards, and got treated badly because of it. And he takes some defiant pride in his status as sim trooper but is also insecure about it.

And he’s intelligent and prefers using brains over using brawn.

There are definitely more things I could list but these are the ones that come to mind immediately.
