Why yes she was my first dating-route pick why do you ask.As for why here in particular, I thought she'd be the most fun of my stable of characters to throw at a sex-positive environment; she's curious enough to give most things a try, and would also think 'my mother would hate it' is a good characteristic.(Also: Of my other purses, I figured Kanji and Yusuke would get snapped up pretty quickly, I don't think I can extract Naoki from the player-created AU I've been playing him in for four years now, and Shinjiro as I play him is too ace/self-denying of physical comfort to do well here. XD)
Hifumi's Hypothetical Persona has stymied me for a while now. On the other hand, the recent evening-apartment-Netflix watch of Father Brown has provided an intriguing option - genderswap Flambeau, because you really can't go wrong with 'master thief with a weakness for Christian holy relics.' No idea how the evolved purse would go.
Return question: What's your headcanon regarding Ren's parents?

Slams fist on table Okay two parts because I have what I headcanon now vs what I liked to headcanon when he had no name.
Here is where I show my stupid nerdism because the first time I played him when there was no canon name, I played him as Takashi Kido, aka Reiji Kido's kid. So basically Kido had him in 2000, which makes him 16 at the time Persona 5 takes place. Reiji's arcanas are both death and devil and he was the Shinjiro of the group (Save VA in Japanese too) who 1) had a Magic Tricks contract option in Persona 1 2) Sold Knives in Persona 2 3) Wildcard potential 4) Sort of looks like him? (no desire to walk around shirtless tho) 5) Kido from Detective Conan last name not related just nerdy...Look don't judge me I just liked this stupid little bridge and that baby being the perfect age for it.
NOW on a more serious note cause P1 and P2 are basically mostly forgotten at this point;
I headcanon his parents are probably involved in the government somewhere - so they can't speak out against Shido and they'd also know that despite just being cafe clients and brief acquaintances of Sojiro, they knew he'd be safe with him there and as much as they love him, they have their hands tied up. I DO HATE that apart from a few characters, parents are nearly non-existent cause honestly I do like the idea of his parents watching their boy just full-out undoing Shido's plots. Having them come to his prison would have been nice but yeah...(spoilers I do headcanon they came to visit and did send him messages we never saw during the year, but knew he was going to fine on his own because of all of what he did, also they are probably being watched). Edit: Also, also when I say government, I don't mean being big government officials like maybe very mundane jobs, just stuck in Shido's round of influence.
So basically I headcanon his parents being nice, just unfortunately even more hand-tied than most characters in the game and feeling pretty hopeless about the situation. I can't see his parents uncaring or being deadbeats? Ren's got too much of a sense of justice and wanting to help people (which is what started this entire thing) to have been brought up by completely shitty and terrible parents.

Nothing wrong with early-purse nerdery at all! I only know bits and pieces via RP osmosis, admittedly, but that's a neat headcanon regardless. As for the non-early-purse answer, that makes a lot of sense. The complete lack of parental contact already made little sense in P4 - you'd think 'my brother and niece are in the fucking hospital?!' would at least merit something - but in P5 it opens the door to a wide range of reactions.
As for Hifumi's childhood... hmm. Well, I'm apparently establishing in a thread that she's been to the Wilton buffet, so that was probably after one of her first major victories. I think her mother was happier before her father got sick, but she's never been a pleasant person as such. Shogi lessons aside, Hifumi is very much a daddy's girl.

LEGIT like at least have Yu's parents...phonecall him about something, sometime. They were probably working for the goverment they have the money to place a phone call MY GOD ATLUS #stop_making_adults_shitty
And aww that's both cute and sad.
Favorite: I think Haru's mostly because HAHA EAT SHIT YOU EVIL CORPORATE GUY HARU'S GONNA BE HER OWN WOMAN (with me) AND MAKE SOME BADASS COFFEE STORES. I also like Hifumi's because "you stood by me even if I wasn't really winning" although I did dislike the "I will become worthy of someone to love" like no, no Ren already likes you okay, you're perfect.
Least Favorite: I think Ann skeeves me a little because of the kissing part and it feels more like forced and I didn't like it. I just also outright don't like Futaba because I like her and Ren more as siblings so it felt wrong to romance her like it would have been wrong to romance Nanako if she was just a few years younger than Yu instead of being a child like, nope my brain just can't. I'm a little eh on the kid with adult ones too but ehhh I figure Japan likes the whole DATE YOUR TEACHER part I'm very meh about it, massages aside.
WHAT ABOUT YOU what are your favorite romance options?

I've only played a couple of the romance routes, since I'm not really into doing a harem-run playthrough. XD Hifumi's is as goddamn adorable as she is (you're right that she doesn't need to become worthy of anything, she just... is), and Haru's was pretty cute too. My roommate went for Chihaya on her playthrough - if I ever romance-route one of the adults, it'll be her, since she's the closest in age and also pretty cute.
(Also: Ann is clearly in lesbians with Shiho, and Futaba is either busy being a memelord or busy perving on ladies. Neeeeeeever going to date those two. XD Also also, I WOULD DATE YUSUKE EACH AND EVERY GODDAMN TIME IF I COULD, his link is basically a series of dates already.)
