"Blue Oyster Cult - Shooting Shark" (Watch on YouTube)

You awaken amidst the darkness with only a faint light to greet you. Your body is hemmed in by shards of crystals, gently sparkling and possibly pricking your skin. The surrounding landscape is dyed in the pinks and purples of the dusk filled with crystals protruding from the ground, some as large as a skyscraper. Even the few shy moon creatures you find in the wild have strange crystal growths on their hides. This is far from home— perhaps a dream? You pinch your skin and slap your cheeks, yet nothing seems to do the trick. Searching for answers yields nothing but an endless expanse of purple dust as far as the eye can see. You have four options: one, panic; two, soil yourself; three, admire it all then soil yourself; or four, go into survival mode. Eventually, you’ll realize that you’re not alone.

After a day or two of living off the crystal wilderness, a group of people find you worse for wear. They are the gallant Moon Knights from the planet of Prismatica. After the strange phenomenon during the past months when scientists observed the sudden appearance of rainbow crystals in the sky, the government has been feverishly combing through the moon for more Moonblessed to be rescued. You’ll eventually be brought into Iris’s moon government center.

You all may have your usual inquiries — Where are we? Who are you? What's going on? Why did I mix tequila with xanax last night? — and the Prismals are almost too eager to answer. They tell you about their world and about the first appearance of the Moonblessed as the medical staff give you an examination to make sure you’re not carrying any viruses or biological hazards. If you react violently, you may be restrained and nerfed with a specialized neurotransmitting gun that releases a numbing agent through the top of your spine. Once the examinations are over, you’re informed that you will be provided accommodations on their planet during your stay.

While waiting for transport to be prepared, you may freely roam around the government center. Eventually you’re called back from exploring, escorted to the docks, and led onto a large transport vessel that makes frequent trips back and forth between the moons and the planet. Faces onboard vary from both old and new Moonblessed as well as Prismal locals. The next destination: Prismatica.

A. After settling into the ship and selecting the current in-flight movie, Back Door Slugs 9, you and those around you may eventually feel a bit of turbulence during the movie’s highly anticipated climax. Did anyone notice it, or is everyone too focused on the hot characters?

At first, it’s a small jitter that’s easy to miss or brush off. But as the transport vessel travels on, the shaking progressively escalates to erratic tremors strong enough to cause severe nausea. A minute later, a voice over the speaker announces the ship will have to make an emergency landing, citing technical difficulties.

Sparks can be seen overhead as more ship parts malfunction. This is a good time to hold your neighbor’s hand, say your last goodbyes, and apologize for that horrible thing you did in the sixth grade. Grip your seat with the might of every god you can think of.

B. Another minute later, a follow-up announcement states that external entities have breached the transport vessel. Everyone is warned to be careful and watch out for each other. Small fires will have to be put out before they worsen with either magic or emergency equipment onboard such as extinguishers. In-flight robotic attendants will be scuttling around to perform immediate repairs.

Eventually, an entire power panel bursts, and prismatic jellyfish unnaturally spill out. The jellyfish will try to latch and suction onto any technological devices close by such as the television screens on the seats or communicators and will show preference to Iris Moonblessed over the rest. Be ready to help and pull numerous jellyfish off both the faces of Moonblessed and Prismals!

▶ Jaws IV: Jaws Harder
Planet Prismatica, Outer Lunatia | top

The emergency landing successfully completes and the transport vessel will safely land on top of a gorgeous lake filled with tiny glaciers floating by. When reached out and touched, you’ll find out that the “glaciers” are surprisingly cool crystals and not ice.

The ship will be left hovering idly on the water surface while passengers are ferried to solid ground using portable emergency boats. However, civilization is still a distance away.

A. You’ve probably heard of flying sharks from a veteran Moonblessed. But how about sea lions? These aquatic lions are born with scaly skin and gills outside of their crystallized manes. Unfortunately, they haven’t tasted fresh meat in quite some time. If there are any injured onboard or near your boat, the chances of the sea lions detecting people will be higher as they are drawn to the scent of blood. Growling hungrily, they will be quick to latch onto the boats, biting the edges, and trying to knock everyone overboard for dinner.

After surviving through so far, the Prismals guide everyone to a nearby encampment run by humanoid rabbits. They are tall, built, and have a habit of mentioning their virility an awkward amount of times. They are also generous and will share their game meat and fresh crops while allowing everyone to rest for the night at the only inn in their village.

B. There is no running water all the way out here, so if anyone wants a bath, they’ll have to do it traditionally. The village protects a natural spring, which is a good place to bathe away the sea water. Around the spring, the rabbit folk’s friends — little scintilla chinchillas — will shock away any predators that dare to approach their sanctuary! Be at ease and feel free to offer your friends shampoo massages.

The next day, the rabbits can be seen hacking away at some of the wilder-looking plants for an easier pathway. If you wake up early enough, you can ask some of them for a tour of the beautiful greenery. They mention that it’s thanks to the Moonblessed that their crops have been doing so well lately — the result of all the chroma influx. The rest of the journey to the city will be smooth sailing.

Level 2, City of Lunatia | top

Welcome to Prismatica’s hub, Lunatia, the city of your dreams! A bustling metropolis lush with bright lights, vibrant colors, luxuriant plant life, and all the conveniences of technology absent from your own world… It seems like paradise to all the uninitiated. After a quick tour of the city, new arrivals can find themselves getting cozy in their new homes.

A. Find new roommates and say hello to your neighbors! City officials will give you directions to the designated districts across Level 2 and instruct you to pick out a unit. Each apartment complex has a different aesthetic, some may look cozy, some stylish, and some bizarre. The free accommodations have a basic living space that can only fit two or three people at most in one unit.

Starter Chromaspace furnishings are provided which can be controlled with the touch of a built-in panel. Examples are color-changing curtains, transforming sofa beds, cabinets turning into tables, etc. Customizing your apartment or moving out will have to wait until you earn more chroma. Until then, why don’t you check out your new neighborhood or explore the city levels? Maybe your new roommates or neighbors can give you a “hand” with allowance for dinner.

B. A new high-end boutique, Prissy Polyp, has opened in Level 2. As compensation for what happened, both Moonblessed and Prismals that were affected in yesterday’s flight will receive 50% off their total purchase. Those unaffected will receive 30% discount coupons as a promotional gift. All are encouraged to visit with their friends or special someone, try on some things together, ~~enjoy each other in the fitting rooms~~, and deal with the loud, ear-blistering background pop music.

Their clothing collections are characterized by bright iridescent designs, some features such as design patterns may glow ethereally in the dark. One of their signature dresses features a one piece (also available on their trench coats) that can amplify the appearance of one’s decolletage, gluteal muscles, and/or bulge with the press of a neon button. Another item among their collection is the maiden sweater: a sleek, backless sweater that shocks those who attempt unwanted touches. Others include skin-tight leggings (also available on their shorts or pants) which produce pleasant and relaxing vibrations on all lower extremities and fashionable polyp-shaped hats for all kinds of people. It’s a huge shop, you never know what else to find in there.

It... It doesn't have to be indecent, although... Well, Hanguang-jun does not like to be touched, so it would probably have been very difficult for him if neither Senior Wei nor I had been here. But any affectionate contact - affectionate for both - will do.

And... Senior Wei does not remember... What happened at the Guanyin temple. While Hanguang-jun does, and I know about it. I think Sect Leader Nie is from even earlier.

[Sizhui and Hanguang-jun? Had affectionate contact?!? Even knowing that it doesn't have to be indecent, the very idea has Ling's mind spinning. His face grows a little pale, only to switch to a bright red when the Guanyin Temple comes up. Many things happened there, none of them good, but mentioning it specifically in the context of Wei Wuxian and Hanguang-jun sends Ling's thoughts racing along a single track. All the talk of indecency before arguably isn't helping.]

How could he forget a thing like that?!

[Apart from anything else: Wuxian's behavior there was the most shameful - and, indeed, indecent - that Ling has ever witnessed. It's not that he doesn't want Wei Wuxian and Hanguang-jun to be happy together, but he never needed to hear those words or see those hugs!

But of course that was Sizhui's point: Wuxian hasn't forgotten. It just hasn't happened for him yet, apparently. Suddenly Ling feels a little sad, and he can't imagine why. After all, it couldn't possibly be because this means that Wuxian also doesn't remember their meeting in the tea house, later.

No - that's actually for the best. Ling hadn't done very well at the white house at all. It's better if Wuxian doesn't remember, so Ling can do better when they meet again.]

Sect Leader Nie is here, too?

[That could be trouble. The man didn't seem to have any dark plans anymore after Guanyin Temple, but Ling still doesn't think he can trust him - and if Sect Leader Nie is from before the Temple, could he not still be plotting evil?]

[ Sizhui can see realization on Jin Ling's face, and he nods, but then looks to the side. ]

Also... Wen Ning was also here for a little while. He.. he was still alive. [ Talk about time discrepancy there. ]

Sect Leader Nie. Sect Leader Jiang, too.

[ At least that gets Sizhui to look back at Jin Ling, face lighting up some because he can bring better news. ]

Hanguang-Jun an Senior Wei. And me. And...

Xue Yang.

[Wen Ning, alive... Even Ling can't help a certain amount of morbid curiosity, in spite of his opinion of the Ghost General still being neutral at best. It's not like he doesn't know that all fierce corpses and the like were once living human beings, but knowing that and seeing it in action are two very different things. Even thinking about it now makes him see Wen Ning as more of a real person than he did before. It's an awkward feeling... but one he chooses not to run away from.

His eyes widen, lips parting to call: "Uncle!" in utter joy, but he swallows the word, considering it too embarrassing. It's fine; it's all good. He'll see his uncle when he sees him. Really, it's no big deal...

Xue Yang, however, is a big deal.]

That guy as well?!

[Well, if one guy could come here from a time before his death, then why not another? Xue Yang might be dangerous, but Hanguang-jun managed to take him down before; he could no doubt do so again. Or maybe this time Ling will get the chance to.]

These moons really won't even leave the dead in peace, whether they deserve it or not.

[It's only after he says those words that he starts to consider the implications of them, his gaze shifting away as he does. He's grown to more or less accept the death of his parents, but... the idea that the moons could theoretically bring them here is awfully appealing.

Only in theory, of course. They deserve peace more than anybody else.]

Yeah.

[ He doesn't add that Wen Ning was so, so very adorable and awkward and sweet. He doesn't add that Wen Ning, if disappearing means going home, only did so to die. Jin Ling's already drowning in information and his own thoughts. He certainly doesn't need that.

Instead, Sizhui holds out his palm. ]

Here... will you give me your hand? Think of it as transferring spiritual energy, only it goes both ways, because both of us get it.

[ Sizhui is not going to even think about how that makes him think of definitions of dual cultivation that he's seen. ]

[It is a lot to take in - and Ling has barely scratched the surface of this new world and all it has to offer, for better and for worse. Still, it's nothing he can't handle. And with his sect (presumably) not in danger due to his absence - assuming Sizhui's explanation of timelines and what not is correct - he can take the rest as it comes, for now.

Ling looks over again as Sizhui asks for his hand. There's no good reason to refuse, though, and if he's going to have to do that "moonlacing" thing, he would much rather it be this than something actually indecent. Besides, Sizhui is ~~a friend~~ ~~reliable~~ someone he knows: he could do worse in a partner. More importantly: Ling can't lose his spiritual power. If this is what he has to do, isn't that only a minor inconvenience? He can at least try it once, and see how it makes him feel.

After that second or so of consideration, he takes Sizhui's hand in his, his grip firm but not harsh.]

[ Sizhui smiles brightly even before their hands touch.

And, well, moonlacing feels good, besides being useful. ]

It's like this. [ Quiet and calm. ] Nothing more necessary unless both people want it.

[It may be like transferring spiritual energy, but it doesn't feel the same at all. It's... calm? No - that's really not the right word for it. But it does feel pleasant, and grounding. It's almost like satisfying a hunger that you weren't even aware of.]

... Who would want to do more than this?

[Nevermind him, he's just trying (and failing) not to be too obvious about how good this feels.]

[ Pause.

Longer pause.

And Sizhui's face goes a little red. ]

You don't want me to talk about the answer to that.

[ Sizhui loves his dads. He does. But he is absolutely certain that Jin Ling would not want to hear their names as an answer. ]

[Of course Ling knows about Sizhui's "parents" being total perverts! He was there to witness what he presumes to be their crowning moment of public indecency, and if brain bleach was a thing, he would do anything in his power to get his hands on it.

It's because he's known about Wei Wuxian and Hanguang-jun being gross since long ago that he can't imagine Sizhui going all flushed about them. After all, to Ling, that can't be a surprise anymore. Which leaves only one possible conclusion: Sizhui must be talking about other people. And the only person he could possibly have reason to blush about -...

Oh gods - it's himself!!!

Instantly, Ling turns far, far redder than Sizhui, his fingers twitching as his palm grows sweaty - but he doesn't pull his hand away. What is he supposed to say now?!? He's shocked, but he doesn't want to insult Sizhui, and yet he's clearly done so already. How on earth can he backpedal without compromising his already stated opinion?!]

T-That -... That's true, but even so...!

[CKJBWKBJKEBFBKJE SOMEBODY SAVE HIM!!]

If people want to get indecent, that is their own decision. As long as they're not forcing the sight on anybody, so they can at least pretend to be decent...

[He just keeps making this worse. He really, truly doesn't want to make Sizhui feel bad, if he did anything indecent here! He doesn't want to lose a friend over this.]

If they want to, then... they should do it.

[ Aaaaahhh????

Sizhui blinks, startled, and squeezes the hand in his a little, reassuringly. ]

I don't think you'll get to see anything that you don't want to. Hearing is something else, but ... there are ways to avoid that, I'll show you when we get back there.

Come. [ A slight tug on the hand he's holding, and he stands up without letting go. ] Let me show you around up here before it's time to head down to Prismatica.

[Is it really reassuring, or is it just unsettling? Ling, for one, isn't sure yet. But it's not a bad kind of unsettling, and at least Sizhui isn't upset with him. Ling has rarely worried about offending people, but in this case, and with this person, and on this moon -... Well, it's different, somehow.

Hearing it?! He's not sure he even wants to think about that - but at least Sizhui has a solution, so Ling decides not to think about it.]

We can really go to another planet, just like that?

[Even swords can't fly that far. Even if he knows about space ships in theory by now, it's still hard to imagine them going that far.]

Well, not just like that. You go on a 'spaceship' to get there. And it takes a while.

At least I don't get seasick on those?

[ Sizhui leads him first to where they can actually look up from the moon. And see the huge planet in the sky. And maybe slivers of the other two moons.

It's an entirely different skyskape, when one looks up. ]

... Still, Ling can't actually disagree. He rolls his eyes a bit as he looks at Sizhui being all moony, but when he looks up and gives the scenery a chance, himself, he's rather impressed by it, too.]

[ Sizhui shakes himself, and smiles at Jin Ling. ]

Everything here is very, very different. There are a lot of questions that I don't know the answers to, myself, either, even after having been here for two months.

But let me show you around. At least it's a little less crowded here than down in Lunatia.

[If their world looks anything like it, from their moon? Who even thinks about such things?! These Lans... and Sizhui in particular - they really do some pointless thinking.

Yet Ling finds it hard to judge, somehow. The criticism is right there on his tongue, leaving a bitter aftertaste, but he chooses to keep it to himself. Somehow, the hand-holding makes him feel a little guilty for even thinking anything "bad" about Sizhui - even though it's reasonable! Those are definitely some pointless thoughts Sizhui is spouting!!

Two months... Ling's barely been here two days, and he's well and truly tired of it already. Imagine being here two months...]

Talk to me in the meantime. What sects are here? What's the political situation like?

It's... very different on Prismatica. The land that is known, that is available, is a lot less, because there was a calamity about two hundred years ago and most of the planet... you can't even travel over it normally, let alone live there.

We will be brought down the city of Lunatia, which is the biggest city in the area where we have access. Last month, people could use technology to visit another place, but it was complicated and rather dangerous. And it required two people's minds to ... work together.

The city itself is not run by sects, or by a dynasty. There is a government that people are employed in and rise in, but the title of the leader is not - it's not inherited, as far as I know.

Aside from us, there are a few other cultivators who come from places that I have not exactly heard about, nor do I recognize their robes. Maybe they are from a different world, I don't know.

And everything is... you can talk to people over a bracelet. You can go to a building and by anything in it. Like a shop, except a lot, a lot bigger. There is running water inside the houses and bathrooms. It's... it's very different.

[ He trails off, a little lost for words. Two months in, and it still overwhelms him. But he wants to learn everything. Everything. ]

How do they avoid constant warfare, if it's not inherited?

[Really - there's enough conflict when leadership is inherited! Without even that much to go on, Ling can't imagine how even a single city would manage peace. He doesn't truly need or expect an explanation; he's stating his doubts more than posing a real question. It's probably for the best: Sizhui has so much to explain as it is.

"Running water inside the houses" makes it sound like there's a gentle little river to drink from and bathe running through every house. It's actually a rather nice mental image, and Ling looks forward to seeing that and many other things that Sizhui is describing. Maybe he'll like this new planet and maybe he won't, but now that he knows his sect is probably fine, and not being taken from him while he's here... he can deal with it. If anything, he's kind of curious.]

What about night hunts? What kind of creatures are here?

... I don't honestly know. There doesn't seem to be any indication of people wanting the authority in a way in which they can't get it, I guess? So at least that right, that doesn't seem an issue.

And... there doesn't seem to be night hunts to be called for. At least there have not been any so far? Perhaps because the Calamity changed life and everything had to be begun from the very start, so there was less resentment and more hope. That I have seen, at least!

Also - a lot of the people here have animal features. You've seen that already, but it's more of that in Lunatia. It doesn't mean they're anything wrong. Or if you start having some animal traits, there is anything wrong with you.

[ He thinks that the scientists would have explained that part to Jin Ling, but. Better mention it. ]

[Less resentment and more hope... That certainly sounds wonderful. It's something Ling wants to believe, too - but at the same time: if it seems too good to be true, it usually is.]

Even if that's true, the beginning must have known a great deal of resentment. Starting from scratch leads to as much frustration as hope, when one knows what one's missing.

[Probably. Maybe. Or maybe he's just arguing against his own hope, here, trying to stay realistic.

Regardless, it's something he'll investigate for himself soon enough. Not because he doesn't trust Sizhui, because he does. But nothing can be all hope and no resentment worth mentioning.]

If I start having animal traits? [He's surprisingly okay with the animal people, but that's mostly because he assumes that's just the way they are. It is not, nor will it ever be, what he wants to be.] Why would that happen?

Yeah, I think we're all keeping our eyes open, just in case.

And... about that. When the moons are full, those who are associated to them get... affected. Not everyone is, but I think a lot of people feel some sort of influence. And partial to full transformation.

The scientists back in there can explain more, I think.

[ Is Sizhui's face turning a little red? Maybe... ]

[If the information is concerning, Sizhui's blush is far more so. Ling knits his brow, trying to understand how animal transformations can be cause for blushing in the first place.]

What influence? What kind of transformations?

Are you saying people turn into an actual animal!?

[Still no good reason to blush, he thinks, but more than enough reason to worry. He likes animals well enough, but he sure doesn't want to be one.]

It's... Some people turn into an animal and some only get some parts. It goes away after the moon's days are over! But people can get, like. A fox's tail. Or wings, I think? Or antlers!

[ No, not quite reason to blush, but at the same time... And that's not even mentioning the effects of the foxes' wine. ]

The moons affect moods and... sometimes wants, too. I think those are usually possible to deal with without embarrassing oneself.

[Antlers?! This is starting to sound absolutely ridiculous. It takes a fair amount of self-control for Ling not to feel all over his body for extraneous parts, but he manages on sheer determination.]

I can't imagine the animal parts are the same.

[He absolutely believes that any moods and wants will be just fine. Such things are easy to overcome, so they shouldn't get embarrassing. (He's going to regret thinking that...) Animal parts, however...]

With a tail or wings, one can't even get dressed properly.

People with antlers keep announcing they have trouble going through doors, too.

[ There is a hint of amusement to Sizhui's expression, but it's basically drowned out by the compassion. He's not mocking, merely letting Jin Ling know what to expect.

His expression clears quickly, though. ]

But again, not everyone gets affected! You might be fine. And I think there are clothes that accommodate different changes. Only... not robes.
