"Blue Oyster Cult - Shooting Shark" (Watch on YouTube)

You awaken amidst the darkness with only a faint light to greet you. Your body is hemmed in by shards of crystals, gently sparkling and possibly pricking your skin. The surrounding landscape is dyed in the pinks and purples of the dusk filled with crystals protruding from the ground, some as large as a skyscraper. Even the few shy moon creatures you find in the wild have strange crystal growths on their hides. This is far from home— perhaps a dream? You pinch your skin and slap your cheeks, yet nothing seems to do the trick. Searching for answers yields nothing but an endless expanse of purple dust as far as the eye can see. You have four options: one, panic; two, soil yourself; three, admire it all then soil yourself; or four, go into survival mode. Eventually, you’ll realize that you’re not alone.

Iris Moon, Government Center (Arrival) and Outer Space | top

After a day or two of living off the crystal wilderness, a group of people find you worse for wear. They are the gallant Moon Knights from the planet of Prismatica. After the strange phenomenon during the past months when scientists observed the sudden appearance of rainbow crystals in the sky, the government has been feverishly combing through the moon for more Moonblessed to be rescued. You’ll eventually be brought into Iris’s moon government center.

You all may have your usual inquiries — Where are we? Who are you? What's going on? Why did I mix tequila with xanax last night? — and the Prismals are almost too eager to answer. They tell you about their world and about the first appearance of the Moonblessed as the medical staff give you an examination to make sure you’re not carrying any viruses or biological hazards. If you react violently, you may be restrained and nerfed with a specialized neurotransmitting gun that releases a numbing agent through the top of your spine. Once the examinations are over, you’re informed that you will be provided accommodations on their planet during your stay.

While waiting for transport to be prepared, you may freely roam around the government center. Eventually you’re called back from exploring, escorted to the docks, and led onto a large transport vessel that makes frequent trips back and forth between the moons and the planet. Faces onboard vary from both old and new Moonblessed as well as Prismal locals. The next destination: Prismatica.

A. After settling into the ship and selecting the current in-flight movie, Back Door Slugs 9, you and those around you may eventually feel a bit of turbulence during the movie’s highly anticipated climax. Did anyone notice it, or is everyone too focused on the hot characters?

At first, it’s a small jitter that’s easy to miss or brush off. But as the transport vessel travels on, the shaking progressively escalates to erratic tremors strong enough to cause severe nausea. A minute later, a voice over the speaker announces the ship will have to make an emergency landing, citing technical difficulties.

Sparks can be seen overhead as more ship parts malfunction. This is a good time to hold your neighbor’s hand, say your last goodbyes, and apologize for that horrible thing you did in the sixth grade. Grip your seat with the might of every god you can think of.

B. Another minute later, a follow-up announcement states that external entities have breached the transport vessel. Everyone is warned to be careful and watch out for each other. Small fires will have to be put out before they worsen with either magic or emergency equipment onboard such as extinguishers. In-flight robotic attendants will be scuttling around to perform immediate repairs.

Eventually, an entire power panel bursts, and prismatic jellyfish unnaturally spill out. The jellyfish will try to latch and suction onto any technological devices close by such as the television screens on the seats or communicators and will show preference to Iris Moonblessed over the rest. Be ready to help and pull numerous jellyfish off both the faces of Moonblessed and Prismals!

▶ Jaws IV: Jaws Harder
Planet Prismatica, Outer Lunatia | top

The emergency landing successfully completes and the transport vessel will safely land on top of a gorgeous lake filled with tiny glaciers floating by. When reached out and touched, you’ll find out that the “glaciers” are surprisingly cool crystals and not ice.

The ship will be left hovering idly on the water surface while passengers are ferried to solid ground using portable emergency boats. However, civilization is still a distance away.

A. You’ve probably heard of flying sharks from a veteran Moonblessed. But how about sea lions? These aquatic lions are born with scaly skin and gills outside of their crystallized manes. Unfortunately, they haven’t tasted fresh meat in quite some time. If there are any injured onboard or near your boat, the chances of the sea lions detecting people will be higher as they are drawn to the scent of blood. Growling hungrily, they will be quick to latch onto the boats, biting the edges, and trying to knock everyone overboard for dinner.

After surviving through so far, the Prismals guide everyone to a nearby encampment run by humanoid rabbits. They are tall, built, and have a habit of mentioning their virility an awkward amount of times. They are also generous and will share their game meat and fresh crops while allowing everyone to rest for the night at the only inn in their village.

B. There is no running water all the way out here, so if anyone wants a bath, they’ll have to do it traditionally. The village protects a natural spring, which is a good place to bathe away the sea water. Around the spring, the rabbit folk’s friends — little scintilla chinchillas — will shock away any predators that dare to approach their sanctuary! Be at ease and feel free to offer your friends shampoo massages.

The next day, the rabbits can be seen hacking away at some of the wilder-looking plants for an easier pathway. If you wake up early enough, you can ask some of them for a tour of the beautiful greenery. They mention that it’s thanks to the Moonblessed that their crops have been doing so well lately — the result of all the chroma influx. The rest of the journey to the city will be smooth sailing.

Level 2, City of Lunatia | top

Welcome to Prismatica’s hub, Lunatia, the city of your dreams! A bustling metropolis lush with bright lights, vibrant colors, luxuriant plant life, and all the conveniences of technology absent from your own world… It seems like paradise to all the uninitiated. After a quick tour of the city, new arrivals can find themselves getting cozy in their new homes.

A. Find new roommates and say hello to your neighbors! City officials will give you directions to the designated districts across Level 2 and instruct you to pick out a unit. Each apartment complex has a different aesthetic, some may look cozy, some stylish, and some bizarre. The free accommodations have a basic living space that can only fit two or three people at most in one unit.

Starter Chromaspace furnishings are provided which can be controlled with the touch of a built-in panel. Examples are color-changing curtains, transforming sofa beds, cabinets turning into tables, etc. Customizing your apartment or moving out will have to wait until you earn more chroma. Until then, why don’t you check out your new neighborhood or explore the city levels? Maybe your new roommates or neighbors can give you a “hand” with allowance for dinner.

B. A new high-end boutique, Prissy Polyp, has opened in Level 2. As compensation for what happened, both Moonblessed and Prismals that were affected in yesterday’s flight will receive 50% off their total purchase. Those unaffected will receive 30% discount coupons as a promotional gift. All are encouraged to visit with their friends or special someone, try on some things together, ~~enjoy each other in the fitting rooms~~, and deal with the loud, ear-blistering background pop music.

Their clothing collections are characterized by bright iridescent designs, some features such as design patterns may glow ethereally in the dark. One of their signature dresses features a one piece (also available on their trench coats) that can amplify the appearance of one’s decolletage, gluteal muscles, and/or bulge with the press of a neon button. Another item among their collection is the maiden sweater: a sleek, backless sweater that shocks those who attempt unwanted touches. Others include skin-tight leggings (also available on their shorts or pants) which produce pleasant and relaxing vibrations on all lower extremities and fashionable polyp-shaped hats for all kinds of people. It’s a huge shop, you never know what else to find in there.

[The dog ears are new. They're new enough, in fact, that Jin Ling doesn't immediately identify Wuxian, focused as he is on fending off the sea lion - but it doesn't take long before he realizes whom he's just given a hand in saving himself.

As the sea lion's dealt with, Ling calls back his sword, sheathing it just so he can cross his arms with particular emphasis.]

Who else would it be? Have you been here so long that you've forgotten my name already?

[... He can only act cool about this because he's talked to Sizhui, who's told him about the others from their world who are here - but shhh, let him pretend.]

[ ok.............. unexpected but not unwelcome. it's likely that jin ling, like everyone else, comes from a different point in time, right? he may not know how their next meeting will go, if jin ling would just frown at him, attack him or ignore him altogether, but whichever it is, it couldn't be better than this. good old little mistress of lanling jin sect. wei wuxian won't have to worry about another stab anytime soon... probably. hopefully. ]

Of course not! I wasn't entirely sure, it's the first time I see you being so reliable.

[ just kidding, kid, you did good! but hopefully, the fact he'd go as far as tease him means they're on good terms, maybe? no hard feelings! no grudges! no ice-cold glaring! it's the best end wuxian could have hoped for, really.

and even better: no fairy. ]

I didn't know you were on the plane as well, though. Did you get hurt anywhere?

[Clearly that comment about him being reliable is just a veiled insult... but, even thinking that, it feels more like a compliment, and Ling doesn't dislike that, as much as he shouldn't care.

Which clearly means he has to be a little bitch about it.]

I've been more reliable than you since before we met.

[Not technically true, but. Close enough.

Even as he says such things, there's not much venom in them, and he lets go of them again soon enough. Maybe it's not a huge change from the Jin Ling Wuxian knows, but it's definitely progress.]

I'm the one who had to save you [QUESTIONABLE but okay] and it's me you're worrying about?

I'm fine. It was just a landing.

[He's had worse ones. Just not in a space vessel; that was new.]

[ almost a bit too unconsciously, wei wuxian nods at jin ling's words; good good, he thinks, and enjoys the way their interaction is flowing. jin ling definitely is from a different point in time, and something in him even hopes he comes from the future, like lan wangji — it would mean there's hope for the two of them, that despite the stab he received from the junior as he was leaving koi tower, there'd be no hard feelings, and their relationship wouldn't become nearly as sour as his and his uncle's.

good. is he even allowed to feel any relief from this? jin ling goes on and on, with friendly teasing (it's how he sees it, that is), and his body eases into relief, finding the strength and will to approach the boy. ]

Of course. You're small and easier to get hurt. Why would I not worry about you?

[ besides, if jiang cheng ended up finding out both jin ling and 'mo xuanyu' were in the same vicinity together and jin ling got hurt, not for a minute he doubts jiang cheng would blame him for not protecting him. your nephew isn't a child anymore, jiang cheng, let the boy get hurt a few times. it builds character! ]

But good. You're doing a good job at attacking these sea lions too. They don't seem very strong, so I guess it's good practice anyways. Have you found anyone else?

[Something is definitely a little different. Sizhui has already told Ling that Wuxian is from a time before the Guanyin Temple, but it's only now that Ling starts wondering how much Wuxian does remember.

Well... It's fine, anyway. Clearly it doesn't matter to him.]

It's because they're not strong that it doesn't even count as practice.

I've found a few. [Somehow the way he says it manages to sound like showing off, as if he's already met everyone worth knowing in this entire galaxy.] Lan Sizhui told me a thing or two.

It means you're seen as weaker and more fragile. Your legs are short and can't run large distances. Also, just because they're not strong, it doesn't mean you can ignore them. Experience is experience regardless of how deathly your opponent is.

[ listen to your seniors for once, jin ling! he's still your uncle! he literally gave you your courtesy name, for god's sake!! but instead, wei wuxian just shakes his head almost in disappointment (he isn't disappointed, jin ling still did good), crossing his arms across his chest.

he's keeping an eye out, too. there are still some sea lions around, though the others around them seem to be taking care of them well. wei wuxian has got some talismans left if something came to happen, at the very least. ]

You found Sizhui? [ good, he thinks, because sizhui would definitely give him the necessary and important information. there's no one better to rely information to jin ling than a friend his age. ] What did he tell you?

Who says I can't run long distances!? Let people see me as weaker, then. I don't care. [HE SO CARES!] It'll be so much more regret for them when I prove them wrong.

[And he will. Nevermind that this entire discussion is absolutely rhetorical: he absolutely will.]

That uncle's here, and Hanguang-jun, and some others. [Like you, l o l, definitely not important enough to mention by name. (Well, it should be obvious enough anyway, what with how you're literally in front of him.)] That you don't even remember what happened in the Guanyin temple.

[Sizhui told him a lot more, really, but those are the highlights Ling chooses to go with.]

[ way to go, kid. at least the more jin ling tries to prove other people wrong, the harder he'll practice, the stronger he'll grow. wei wuxian doesn't doubt for a single second that ~~his~~ jiang cheng's nephew will grow to become a spectacular cultivator. at least in matter of strength, really — his temper has a long way still.

but at last, he manages to extract from the junior the answer he wanted. it's likely he's from the same time as sizhui, either a little before or a little after — what matters is that ultimately, he's far ahead in the future, and judging by the way he's acting towards him, their relationship won't stain. that's good. it's really the only thing wei wuxian wanted to know. ]

Huh? Who says I don't remember? I never witnessed whatever happened at the Guanyin temple, so you can't say I don't remember it.

[ he has yet to live through it; the wei wuxian jin ling knows is another entire different case. ]

HanGuang-Jun already told me enough, so don't say anything. You'll spoil the surprise. [ if there's anything more surprising than being married to lan wangji, that is. ] You, Sizhui and Lan Zhan are the ones in the future, so be careful with what you tell people. One wrong word and you can change your own future.

[ you know, people would do things differently with new knowledge and create an entire new parallel world. not that he has knowledge of it, but it's an obvious thing to think about. ]

Jiang Cheng and Sect Leader Nie know even less than me, so just treat them like you normally would. [ should he even mention jiang cheng doesn't even know he's wei wuxian in mo xuanyu's body? he'll find out sooner or later, so what does it matter? ]

[The marriage is the least of the surprises, really. Jin Ling still has nightmares sometimes about all the physical stuff and the declarations of cutsleeve lust. How disgusting!

At least that means he's not overly eager to share those details, or even think about them. His face alternates shades of white and green just thinking about it now.]

... Uncle is from before your time?

[That's something of a shock, just because of the disconnect it suggests. Ling may not know all the details of his uncle's inner thoughts - he's still curious about whatever it was that Jiang Cheng decided not to tell Wuxian! - but there's still enough that Ling knows his uncle won't like finding out... and he doesn't like lying to Jiang Cheng, even by omission.

He does lie to his uncle, of course, to protect himself and others, and he will lie to his uncle here, if he has to. But he still doesn't like it.]

From a couple of weeks before.

[ it should go without saying — jin ling might not know exactly what wei wuxian remembers, but it's almost logical. he's from before the guanyin temple, and if jiang cheng is from even before, then there's one important piece of information that must be addressed.

the one piece of information he didn't think it was worth mentioning, but now that is likely about to be brought up, he might as well. jin ling is young and impulsive, after all — it's best to make things clear between them, especially when jiang cheng is involved. ]

He still thinks I'm Mo Xuanyu. Lan Zhan and Sizhui are probably keeping it a secret, but I don't care if he finds out. He will eventually. He already did for me, so it's not like whatever he does when he finds out here will be much different from what we remember.

[ except this time he probably won't be able to use wen ning as an excuse — but it's fine, really. he deserves it, all the anger jiang cheng has to vent on him, because of him. ]

I'm not telling you to lie to him or tell him the truth. But don't feel obliged to keep up appearances if you can't.

[That's kind of a lot, isn't it? Even if Jiang Cheng always suspected that "Mo Xuanyu" was Wei Wuxian, the same had gone for dozens if not hundreds of other people. Even Ling doesn't know in how far his uncle actually believes his own accusations. Regardless, getting it confirmed that this is, in fact, Wei Wuxian is bound to be a shock, even here and now. It's going to be a disaster.

And Wuxian is right about one thing: it's only a matter of time.]

The problem isn't whether I can do it or not.

[He just has to address that part first. Don't look down on him!]

... If you know he's going to find out, tell him. It's better to be prepared when it happens, anyway.

[Like, do you really want Jiang Cheng to invade your apartment in the middle of the night and zidian the hell out of you, just because someone blabbed by accident?! Even Ling knows and may say the wrong thing at some point - not that he wants to admit that - and clearly a lot of people know. If it's going to happen anyway, the timing is not something one should leave to chance.]

You know he's going to want to beat you half to death, so let it happen on your own terms.

[ he'd love to see him try, what with wei wuxian living together with two entire lans!! he's seriously, genuinely not worried about that — he expects it, jiang cheng kicking down his apartment door and harming him, with zidian or with words alone. he expects it in its entirely, but at the same time, it isn't as simple as talking to him about it. hey jiang cheng guess what i'm actually wei wuxian and not mo xuanyu—— ]

And then what?

[ really. and then, what? what is he supposed to do next? jiang cheng would ask him why the fuck he's telling him that, on his own. probably something like, oh, since we're conversed in here and i even saved you a month or two ago, then we're fine and i can't hate you anymore? — he can easily hear it in jiang cheng's voice. jin ling, and nie huaisang, too. they don't understand how complicated their relationship is. how he can't simply talk things out with him, and everything would be fine, like they used to be.

it isn't that simple.

is it ever going to be? ]

Come with me? Where? I'm not going to talk to him about it, and you've got no business in what's going on between the two of us.

[ it isn't meant to sound rude, really, but it's the truth. this runs far too deep, far too old, ever since the both of them were just a bit older than jin ling. he doesn't want to involve him further than he already has been involved. he doesn't want to involve anyone else in his own matters — he has already done enough of that for ten lifetimes. ]

I'm already prepared for whatever's to come. I told you, I already witnessed what he's going to be like when he finds out. I'm not afraid of him, and if he wants to vent his anger on me, then so be it. It's not like I'll just let him kill me like that.

He's my uncle. You dare to tell me I have no business in it?!

[What is he trying to accomplish here, though? What does he expect to come from having Wuxian's identity revealed to Jiang Cheng? There'll be anger and probably violence, regardless: Ling knows that. The timing of it all doesn't make a difference. So why does he feel so strongly about this?

Secrets. Intrigue. He's used to them, and he knows that, from a political point of view, they can't be avoided - but that doesn't mean he has to like them. Besides, this isn't politics: this is personal. As long as this secret stands between Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng, their relationship will never improve even a little.

They're still family, in a way. And they've both lost enough family that willingly casting away a good part of what little family they have left feels like an insult to their family - including to Ling.

That's not so easy to put into words, though.]

If you know what's coming anyway, why are you putting it off? Do you want to give him an excuse to be even angrier?

[ what's up with juniors* of this generation who just won't listen to him?

wei wuxian sighs, and it's clear he doesn't want to talk about this. not with jin ling, who doesn't understand. who wasn't alive for all that happened in the past. for a second, he almost wishes he still hated him — another stab would be much better pain to feel than having this conversation, than thinking about all he did that ruined his relationship with jiang cheng. he has said this before, and even now, it'd be the same.

he doesn't have anything to say to jiang cheng. he doesn't have the rights to say anything.

wei wuxian pinches the bridge of his nose, exasperated. ]

Fine. I'll tell him, then he'll ask me what I'm telling him for, and I'll say it was your request. And then suddenly everything's fine.

[ things aren't that easy. this is the one part jin ling doesn't understand; many a thing can be solved by talking, but not this. not when jiang cheng's hatred runs so deep. ]

I already don't bother him even when he thinks I'm Mo Xuanyu. It's best for us to just stay apart. He's doing his own thing here, why should I ruin that by letting him know someone he hates is here too? Wasn't he already crazy looking for anyone who practiced demonic cultivation back home? He can relax here. I'm not going to ruin that.

[ at least this one thing, if he can avoid it. ]

Besides, the only one who will deal with his anger once he finds out will be me. None of you have to worry about that. Just let me handle this.

[Of course everything won't suddenly be fine. Ling may be brutally straight-forward about this, but he's not expecting miracles. All he's hoping for is a start. And, whatever Wuxian's reasons for postponing that start, the longer they put it off, the worse it will be. Of that, Ling is convinced.

Jiang Cheng's hatred may be considerable, but you know what? So was Ling's. He had as much reason to hate Wuxian as his uncle did, but he managed to get over it. Therefore, of course his uncle can do it, too. Ling doesn't expect Wuxian and Jiang Cheng to be best friends, suddenly, but they'll never move ahead at all if they don't first destroy the obstacle in their way.]

What is it with you and keeping secrets? Is it some kind of fetish?!

[Of course some secrets are meant to be kept, but Ling doesn't see the point in keeping this one. He will if Wuxian will: it's not his secret to share, anyway. But that doesn't mean that he can't call out the perceived bullshit of it all.]

There's no kindness in hiding a painful truth that will come out anyway. If anything, it's crueler.

[Even so, he's not going to interfere. He can't make Wuxian do anything, nor does he especially want to try. But he knows his uncle, and he knows that this won't end well.]

If you tell him, I want to be there.

[ wei wuxian is greedy.

greedy in all its selfless ways — even here, now, this is what he judges best for jiang cheng, without ever asking his opinion on the matter, without considering his feelings, and not the feelings he thinks he understands. it's a mistake he continues to do even now, towards someone so important to him. a leftover arrogance that leaves him unable of understanding just what truly matters the most for his shidi.

little jin ling knows he has even more secrets he plans on telling nobody. they're secrets, after all. not meant for another's ears.

he closes his eyes for a second, and exhales sharply afterwards. ]

You're so stubborn. Where did these genes come from? Your mother wasn't like that.

[ neither was jin zixuan, as far as he remembers. not that they ever talked much or had the best relationship, but lord. his shijie definitely wasn't anything like that. she'd smile softly at him, and if possible, try to amend things between her two baby brothers herself. they were too weak for her to continue fighting. they have always been. ]

Fine. I'll talk to him. But I'm asking for HanGuang-Jun's opinion first.

[ he needs a third advice on this, from an actual mature adult (sorry, huaisang). he still thinks it's not the best course of action, would still prefer to keep this under wraps. what is he even going to tell jiang cheng, when the time comes? even if he apologizes, jiang cheng wouldn't accept it. ]

Are you happy now? Juniors shouldn't talk back to their seniors. You should learn more from Sizhui.

[Of course Ling is nothing like his mother. He could never be, nor does he even especially want to be, but... in spite of that, it hurts a little to hear those words. It's probably just because he never got to know his mother, while Wuxian did; it's not strictly jealousy, but he's a little envious all the same, in a distantly longing kind of way.]

Maybe she would have been, if she'd seen how you're behaving right now.

[That's a gamble, honestly, but he'll fight words with words any time, and while he doesn't know if what he's saying is true, he doesn't think it's wrong to say. It's not an insult to his mother, so Wuxian can just deal with it.

Ling still wasn't fully counting on it to work, though: that's a pleasant surprise. Even if it's just an opening, rather than a hard promise, it's extremely satisfying to get his way, or something close enough. What a joyful role reversal!]

I'll stop talking back to my seniors when my seniors start behaving like adults instead of squabbling children.

[... That's a lie in more ways than one. He'll never dare to talk back to Jiang Cheng quite this much, and yet he'll never stop talking back in general.]

Besides, I'm a sect leader. You are just Hanguang-jun's -... [STARTING THAT SENTENCE WAS A MISTAKE!] ... that.

[ (funny how things work, really. they're both, ultimately, boys who lost their parents far too early. jin ling still stands at the worst end of it — wei wuxian might have become orphaned at an early age, but he still had a memory or two. he had only been four when his parents had passed away, meanwhile jin ling was barely a year old. whereas wei wuxian sought every opportunity to hear more about his mother, jin ling visibly shrieks at the mention of his. they're boys who lost their parents, but he had never been teased or shamed about it. that's where they differ, and where the guilt becomes heavier.)

he sighs, nonetheless, disapprovingly. he thinks, though a sensitive topic, that there's no helping in fearing for the mention of one's parents all the time. harboring envy towards others who had theirs alive and caring, isolating oneself for being the 'different one'; it does one no good. he has nothing but the best memories of jiang yanli, and would always be happy to talk about her, to make everyone remember how she was the best woman in the entirety of china. ]

Nuh-uh. She would never scold me. [ he sighs, again, but this time it births the ghost of a melancholic smile. ] But she'd be upset to see her brothers fighting. She could get me to behave simply by looking even seemingly sad.

[ (maybe one day the three of them — jiang cheng, jin ling, and wei wuxian — could sit together and reminisce about jiang yanli. maybe one day, they could teach jin ling to be nothing but proud of the mother who brought him to life.) ]
